A DIY Wall Mounted Spice Rack is easy, affordable and looks great. All supplies are from either a dollar store, big box discount store or craft store. You choose how many spices that you want to store and the size of the area that you want to display them in.
I have used my DIY Wall Mounted Spice Rack for about 3 months and it is wonderful. Measuring spices is easy and painless. I no longer have to cope with jar tops that are too narrow for my measuring spoons or with accidentally dumping spices on my countertop when I pull the measuring spoon out and it catches on the lip of the jar.
I chose the top 18 herbs and spices that I use monthly to display and store on the rack. At first, I tried to arrange them in alphabetical order in rows like soldiers. That idea lasted about two days. Now I just scan them, grab the ones I am looking for and put them back any place on the sheet when I am finished. Since the contents are visible, finding the desired spice is quick and easy.
Supplies:
- Standard Stainless Steel 11″x16″ rimmed baking sheet
- 18 Magnetic office storage tins with clear lid 2.5″ diameter
- Adhesive spice labels or white permanent pen
- Command strips that hold 10-15 lbs
- Adhesive ‘strong’ magnets (optional)
Notes on Supplies:
- Any flat stainless steel sheet will do. You can tell that a sheet is stainless (i.e. magnets will attach to it), by holding a small magnet from your refrigerator near it. If is sticks, it will work for this project. Note: Aluminum will not work. The rim on the sheet holds the tins in place if they slide down the tray a bit.
- The magnetic office storage tins with a clear lid are two for $1 at Dollar Tree. The magnet isn’t very strong and you can go with any storage with an easily removable, clear top and add thin magnets to the bottom.
- Adhesive spice labels are what I chose but you can easily use a white permanent pen for a more rustic look.
- I tried using just the magnetic tin as it comes from the Dollar Tree, however, the magnetic bottom let me down when I added the spices. The weight with the spices was just too much. I tried various magnets and most of them didn’t work or were too thick to adhere to the bottom of the tin. I found these thin adhesive magnets on Amazon that are Force – Grade 8, 4200 Gauss. magnets. They are very cost effective and I no longer have any issues with the tins falling off the wall.
Let’s Get Going — This is pretty Intuitive
- Attach or write labels on tins
- Attach adhesive magnets to bottom of tins
- Using Command strips, attach stainless steel sheet to the wall
- Fill tins with spices and arrange on sheet
That’s it! Next time you are out at a dollar store or big box store, pick up the supplies for this DIY wall mounted spice rack. I hope that you enjoy using it as much as I do!
